about

When Clara Engel (claraengel.bandcamp.com) invited me to contribute to a compilation album of minimalist pieces for the benefit of a Canadian animal shelter, I got some inspiration to incorporate my cat, Penelope, to purr as the backing of several tracks. While the piece I submitted wasn’t a fit for the compilation, I do owe Clara credit for getting this idea started.

In the period of about two weeks in January, I took previous guitar pieces that had not formulated into songs (the 12-string guitar that is producing a sort of synthesized sound in ‘smaller greater world,’ for example) and built on them to create richer soundscapes. I recorded Penelope’s purring, and decided that there should be an album that meditated on the complexity of being with animal companions while also manifesting the different moods I perceive and project upon Penelope. The album title is a reference to a spoken line from Penelope in Homer’s _Odyssey_, who is Penelope’s namesake. The song title “i kept you well” is a line from the Penelope-inspired poem “The Bed That Is a Tree” by Kim Lasky.

The final track of the album is called ‘gavagai’—a reference to the indeterminacy of translation by WVO Quine, who argued that, were we to come upon a heretofore undiscovered group of people, and we heard them using the word ‘gavagai’ in reference to what we might call a ‘rabbit,’ we would be incapable of understanding if ‘gavagai’ meant ‘white thing,’ ‘thing that jumps,’ ‘big-eared creature,’ etc. The translation itself loses meaning. So, I leave Penelope untranslated—to a certain extent. Even the recording of something ‘natural,’ and the production of it by making it an interesting spacial aural listening experience produces and constructs something as natural as a cat’s purrs into ‘art.’

All proceeds from this album and future albums will be donated to the Young Center for Immigrant Children’s Rights.
